Our Mission
Under The Umbrella (UTU) creates a unique therapeutic construct and treatment space designed to welcome families seeking support and services specific to speech, language, and social communication. Our framework integrates a physical space with a developmental, play based approach. We define success as a responsive process interpreted best with each child and family member. Success is so much more than objective data. It’s dynamic and dependent on many factors such as shared interest, emotional state, and present environment. It is growth, integrated across time, and measured through a collaborative process.
Our Approach
We believe that speech, language and communication development is best served in the context of relationship and dynamic play.
Our eclectic approach is tailored to the individual child, following the child's lead and fostering a sense of wonder and balance. We are ever curious and innovative.
We created Under the Umbrella to provide opportunities for children to engage in all fields of interactions; with peers, with families, and with community. We resisted the urge to build walls that would close off our loft into smaller areas. Instead, we created a warm, welcoming space accessible to all and open to creative ideas. We work within the presence of anxiety, directly and indirectly and allow the space to play a major part in our process.
We are Laura Worthen and Julie Burgess-Dennis, founders of Under The Umbrella. UTU is a unique collective. We run our practices independently with our own business licenses and caseloads. But we share Under the Umbrella, as a space and a mind-set, because we are like-minded therapists and collaborators.
Collaborating together to enhance everyone's success is a at the core of what we do. We celebrate the chance to share and discover with our clients, their families and our colleagues.
